Classic specimens are halfbreeds, combinations of copper and silver. Silver is found in crystallized specimens, especially from the White Pine Mine. Most of the miners and mining captains highgraded any native silver specimens. It was profitable to ship the ore to Germany to separate out the silver and return the copper.

Many specimens of native copper are obscured by black or green surface coatings which hide the beauty of the mineral. Black coatings on copper are cupric oxide tenorite to you mineralogists. Green coatings are generally combinations of copper sulfate brochantite and copper chloride atacamite.

Remove unwanted rock by picking, hammering at specimens to be cleaned. Wire brush rock to remove loose, soft material. Soak in muriatic acid hydrochloric approximately 1 hour. Sometimes toilet bowl cleaners contain this acid. This soaking removes all the greenbrown oxidation from copper, plus any calcite is dissolved.

Copper occurs at the Copper King prospect in the SW Sec. 10 T.47N R.12W west of Poplar Mengel, 1971.
